Exploring the Integrate NPD Program: Research and Development Update

As part of our ongoing commitment to addressing complex personality disorders, we are excited to share that our company is in the preliminary phases of research and development for our upcoming Integrate NPD program. Building on the success and insights of our Integrate BPD program, we are now focusing on developing a tailored approach for individuals diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

Understanding the NPD-BPD Dynamic

A key aspect of our current research involves working closely with a group of individuals diagnosed with NPD to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, particularly in relation to a significant figure in their lives: the BPD mother figure. This relationship dynamic is crucial, as many individuals with NPD have reported complex and challenging interactions with a mother figure and/or sibling who has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Our research aims to explore how these relationships influence the development and manifestation of NPD traits. We are particularly interested in examining whether the phases of Reality Integration Therapy™ (RIT), which have early and preliminary evidence of efficacy for BPD, can also support individuals with NPD in their process of separation and individuation from a BPD mother figure.

The RIT Phases and Their Potential Impact

Reality Integration Therapy™ (RIT) is known for its structured approach to addressing deeply ingrained psychological patterns. The therapy is divided into three primary phases:

  1. Fantasy Dismantling: This phase involves challenging distorted beliefs and unrealistic fantasies by aligning them with actual reality. For individuals with NPD, this may involve confronting and redefining their perceptions of self and others, especially in the context of their relationship with a BPD mother figure.
  2. Separation – Individuation: This phase focuses on creating psychological distance from negative internal dynamics and developing a more integrated self. We are investigating whether this phase can assist individuals with NPD in separating from the influence of a BPD mother figure and fostering healthier self-concepts. There are challenges with NPD that do not exist with BPD, such that there is a lack of internal objects to begin with. In BPD, there are internal objects, although flawed and self-harming ones. In NPD, these do not exist at all, which post a challenge that we must further research to see if we can overcome.
  3. Integration & Whole Object Relations: The final phase supports re-connection with society and the development of stable, realistic relationships. Our goal is to determine if this phase can help individuals with NPD establish more balanced and fulfilling relationships, free from the unresolved influences of their BPD parent and their past consequences.

Our Research Approach

To ensure our Integrate NPD program is grounded in real-world efficacy, we are collaborating with individuals diagnosed with NPD to gather valuable insights. This collaborative research involves:

  • In-Depth Interviews and Surveys: To understand the nuances of their relationships with BPD mother figures and the impact of these dynamics on their personality and behavior.
  • Therapeutic Observations: Monitoring how participants respond to RIT phases (with ethical disclosure and consent) and identifying any patterns or challenges specific to the NPD dynamic.
  • Feedback and Adjustments: Using participant feedback to refine and adjust our program, ensuring it meets the unique needs of individuals with NPD.

Looking Ahead

Our preliminary findings are promising, and we are optimistic about the potential of integrating RIT principles into our NPD program. By addressing the specific challenges faced by individuals with NPD in relation to a BPD mother figure, we aim to provide a comprehensive and effective therapeutic approach.

We are dedicated to advancing our understanding and developing solutions that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by personality disorders. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our research and move closer to launching the Integrate NPD program.
